Rhode Island’s Web-Based Fact Sheets Help Boaters Maintain Water Quality

July 28, 2004
Story Archive

Boaters can play an important role in protecting water quality while cleaning their vessels or disposing of fish wastes, according to fact sheets from Rhode Island Sea Grant available at the Web link above.

The sheets cover bilges and fueling, engine maintenance, vessel sewage, sanding and painting, vessel cleaning, and fish wastes. Tips include washing your boat with plain water to avoid overusing detergents and using natural cleansers such as vinegar, citric juices, borax, and baking soda. Use hose nozzles that shut off when released to conserve water and do not clean the bottom of your vessel by scraping or scrubbing it while it is still in the water. The boater fact sheet series is produced by the Rhode island Sea Grant Marine Advisory Service.
