Florida Sea Grant
Steve Kearl
Communications Director
Since 2000, Steve has served as the director for communication program development and support with the Florida Sea Grant College Program, based at the University of Florida, where he is associate director of communication services with the Institute for Food and Agricultural Sciences. His work includes utilization of the latest technology and communication skills in expanding the dissemination of Sea Grant research, education, and extension activities. Techniques used include commercial and public telecasts, audio-visuals, publications and print media, and the Internet. The overall goal is to ensure that people who need it have easy access to science-based information in a useful format. With B.S. and M.P.S. degrees from Cornell University, Steve has worked in a wide variety of professional communication roles. He has experience in publishing as the editor of a regional life-style magazine and as a field editor and managing editor/production manager for a multi-state agricultural magazine. He has served as the overall coordinator for a number of academic international programs at both the University of Florida and Cornell University. Steve also has provided communications skills to international programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, most recently as head of communications for the International Potato Center in Peru.

Georgia Sea Grant
David Bryant
Communications Coordinator
David Bryant joined Georgia Sea Grant as Communications Coordinator in 1998. He received a B.A. in English from Furman University in 1975 and an M.A. in English from the University of Georgia in 1985. Before joining Georgia Sea Grant, he worked for 12 years as a producer in the Georgia Public Radio Network. His current professional enthusiasms are expanding Georgia Sea Grant communications into new media, creating mechanisms for the non-governmental regulation of land-use and exploring the social, political and anthropological dimensions of resource issues. Sometimes, however, he would just rather be watching baseball, playing tennis, fixing his motorcycle, traveling, birding, building small sheds or gardening with native plants. He lives on a small hill in Athens, GA with his wife, Cassie, and dog, Miss Brown.

Louisiana Sea Grant
Roy E. Kron III
Communications Manager
Roy became Louisiana Sea Grant (LSG) communications manager in 2005. He received his B.A. in journalism from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. He began his journalism career at age 17 as a photographer for an alternative weekly newspaper in Baton Rouge. After earning his undergraduate degree, he worked as a copy editor for the Amarillo Globe-News, in Amarillo, Texas. Later, he edited community weekly newspapers in Louisiana and North Texas. He also served as managing editor and editor of the Fort Worth Business Press. Prior to joining Sea Grant, he was director of news and information for Texas Woman's University. Since his arrival at LSG, Roy launched Coast Clips, a quarterly newsletter that highlights the LSG's research and accomplishments. Roy also has expanded LSG's communications program with additional Web sites and content, along with the redesign of several of the program's Web sites. His interests include coastal community development issues and policy, water quality, and coastal restoration.

Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant
Melissa Schneider
Communications Coordinator
Melissa joined Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant in 2006 as communications coordinator, filling a half-time position located at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs. She holds a bachelor's degree in English and Spanish from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Melissa has nine years of experience in print journalism and has worked as a reporter and copy editor for newspapers in Mississippi and South Carolina. Among other honors, she was named South Carolina's best beat reporter in the South Carolina Press Association 2005 Newspaper Contest. Melissa also has taught high school English in Lithuania as a Peace Corps volunteer. Her professional interests include media relations, publications, special Sea Grant projects, and journalism.

Puerto Rico Sea Grant
Camille Martinez Krawiec
Communications Coordinator
Camille joined Puerto Rico Sea Grant (PRSG) as Communications Coordinator in 2006. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a dual-degree B.S. in business administration and international relations. She received her M.A. in Cultural Anthropology from Northeastern University, where she focused on conflicts over natural resources in Latin America and the Caribbean. She currently is a doctoral candidate in Environmental Communications at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where she focuses on conflict resolution, rhetoric, participation, and environmental issues in the mass media. Before joining Sea Grant, Camille coordinated and produced communication materials for the Center for Latin American Studies at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She was a founding member of the Green Team, a group that worked to find solutions for "greening" local elementary schools in Amherst. Originally from New Hampshire, Camille has lived in Puerto Rico for two years with her husband and three children. In her free time, she likes spending time with her family, particularly when they are snorkeling, kayaking, or at the beach.

South Carolina Sea Grant
Susan Ferris Hill
Director of Communications
Susan joined South Carolina Sea Grant (SCSG) in 2001 as public information specialist, and in 2005, she was promoted to director of communications. Her responsibilities include managing the production of print and web publications, writing, public and media relations, as well as serving as co-coordinator for the annual S.C. Beach Sweep/River Sweep litter cleanup. Susan has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Currently she is a member of the Association for Communications Excellence and the National Association of Government Communicators. In her spare time, Susan enjoys road riding, hiking, canoeing, photography, and spending time with her husband and dog at their cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

Texas Sea Grant
Jim Hiney
Communications Coordinator
Jim joined Texas Sea Grant in June 1995 as an editor and his primary duty was writing and publishing the program's quarterly magazine, Texas Shores. He also oversaw special projects as assigned by the program's associate director overseeing communications. Mr. Hiney was appointed communications coordinator in May 2006 following the retirement of the associate director. He holds a B.S. degree in journalism from Texas A&M University, and he worked in print, radio and television news before joining Texas Sea Grant. In addition to administrative duties, Jim continues as editor of Texas Shores. During his 20-plus years as a journalist, he has won more than 30 awards for writing from the Associated Press, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), International Association of Business Communicators and Communications Concepts (APEX). Sigma Xi, the scientific research society, named him Texas A&M's Outstanding Science Communicator for 2005.
